IL-2 Sturmovik

Last modified on 2021.04.15.

First of all many thanks for all the graphic artists for creating so many awesome templates! I were unable to create my skins without them.

I took those templates completely apart, removed things, created a lot of new stuff, then I assembled the whole texture again together. I work in Clip Studio Paint not in Photoshop therefore some technical changes were necessary too.
First I tried to convert DDS files with the official NVIDIA tool, but I found texture quality made with Paint.net (BC3, Linear, DXT5) better.

I added squadron insignias (like the famous Puma) and the aircraft type instead of serial number just because I like this small details on the skin. I did not use real side numbers and markings on the planes. They are based on historical examples but I did not want to reproduce a single plane rather more general skins for squadrons.

I like to fly with Il-2 Sturmovik simulator, my grandfather was radio operator on Me 210 Ca-1 in WW2 (the dogfight depicted in the header is a true story), and I'm an experienced game developer and graphic artist, I decided to create my own RHAF (MKHL) skins.
I started with Bf 109 G-6 (G-6's were produced in Hungary too) and Fw 190 F-8 skins. I consulted with my friend Csaba B. Stenge, who is a military historian and has some great books published about the Royal Hungarian Air Forces. I made more historical illustrations and profile drawings for his books before too, so I used these great archive materials again.

About my skinning method

I work in a different way than I have experioenced in the templates.First I create a "naked" plane with raw surfaces, then I paint on it (different layers of course), then I can delete back the paint. I much more attention to the alpha channel while weathering. I think reflection is much more important than the colors itself to look realistic. I found a high variety of RLM colors, therefore I created a reference chart for myself.
